PH

When you first own a fish tank there are certain things that you need to get a good grip on. This all speaks to making sure that you have a healthy living environment for the fish that you choose. For this there is the matter of learning a few terms and definitions. In truth there is nothing all that difficult about owning a tank full of fish. Actually fish are one of the most easy to care of pets in the entire world. All you need to do is give them a great living environment and give them the highest level of care that you can imagine.

PH is one of the most important terms that you can learn when you are starting out with a fish tank. This has to do with the content and condition of the water where the fish will live. You have probably heard the term used in television commercials but that is completely different then what you will be dealing with when it comes to the PH balance of your fish tank.

PH is the measure of acidity or alkalinity in the water that the fish will be living in. Because each and every species of fish is different you will need to find out the specific PH requirements for the fish that you are purchasing. A PH level that is too high will cause the fish to be sluggish and unresponsive to eating and other activities. This means that the fish is being poisoned by the water that it is swimming in.

PhA PH level that is too low will cause the fish to become ill as it tries to compensate for the lack of minerals in the water. Each fish needs a certain mixture in the water to keep their inner organs functioning in the proper way. The gill slits are the ones that will be most effected by the low PH level. The inner part of the gill is where the fish pulls the oxygen from the water. When this part becomes damaged or is nothing functioning to the best of its ability then the fish will literally drown in its own water.

For most of the fresh water fish that a person can purchase the proper PH level will be 7. This is the neutral level between acid and alkaline. Most people do not understand that a level below 7 is acid. So basically the water has become a corrosive substance that is killing the fish in the tank without you even realizing it.

Take the proper precautions to ensure that the PH balance in your fish tank is at the level that is most healthy for the fish that you own to prevent their death or disease.
